Maria Gil, Lisbon, 1978: graduated in theatre directing and in drama from ESTC Theatre and Cinema Superior School of Lisbon and recently completed an MPhil in Autobiography and Intimacy in Performance from the University of Glasgow. In 2007 she was selected to take part in the 2nd edition of the theatre directing course run by the Sheffield based company Third Angel at the Gulbenkian Foundation Lisbon. She was also one of the twenty international artists chosen for The State of the World residency at the Gulbenkian Foundation 2007.
Since 1997 she has worked as an actress for film and theatre with various directors and theatre companies in Portugal. In 2004 she founded her own company, Teatro do Silêncio, to date producing six critically acclaimed productions: Mostra Lisbon 2005, Boarding Pass: the journey is the destination Lisbon 2006, Between life and Death – Gao Xingjian Lisbon 2007, Rua Maria Brown Lisbon 2007, Glasgow 4: the name of all the streets Lisbon/Glasgow/Tavira/Galicia 2008, Intimate Archives Lisbon 2009.
She collaborates regularly with creators from different fields such as visual artists Ana Rito, Susana Guardado, musicians such as Neil Davidson, Manuel Mota and live art performers such as Miguel Bonneville and Adrian Howells. Her most recent work is a book of collected dream fragments written for the Okuparte Festival in Spain 2009.
