Vera San Payo de Lemos
Vera San Payo de Lemos studied German and English philology at Lisbon University and at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität, Freiburg / Germany. She translated numerous German plays into Portuguese, among them authors such as Werner Schwab, Tankred Dorst, Botho Strauß, Dea Loher. Vera San Payo de Lemos is editor and translator of the current Portuguese edition of Bertolt Brecht’s theatre plays. As a dramaturge she has been working with various theatres in Portugal, among them the Teatro Aberto, Lisbon. Besides her work in theatre and as a translator Vera San Payo de Lemos teaches theatre aesthetics in postgraduate seminars at Lisbon University. She was a member of the international jury of the first European Competition for Drama and she is the patron for Portugal for the Wiesbaden Biennial “New Plays from Europe”. In 2004 she was awarded the prize of the Portuguese Critics Union and she got the Goethe-Medaille in 2006..
